OSHA 5400 – TRAINER COURSE IN OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH STANDARDS FOR THE MARITIME INDUSTRY

This course is designed for individuals interested in teaching the 10- and 30-hour Maritime safety and health Outreach Training Program to their employees and other interested groups. Special emphasis is placed on those topics required in the 10- and 30-hour Outreach Training Program as well as the most hazardous in the maritime industry using OSHA Maritime Standards as a guide. Students are briefed on effective instructional approaches and use of visual aids and handouts. This course allows the student to become a trainer in the Outreach Training Program, to conduct 10- and 30-hour maritime classes in shipyard employment, marine terminals, and longshoring, and to issue cards to participants after verifying course completion. Students in OSHA #5400 Trainer Course in OSHA Standards for the Maritime Industry who wish to participate as authorized Outreach Trainer Program trainers in the OSHA Outreach Training Program must successfully prepare a presentation on an assigned OSHA maritime industry Outreach Training Program topic individually or as part of a group and successfully pass a written exam at the end of the course.
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Instruct Maritime workers in OSHA 10 and 30 Maritime Standards hazard identification course
- Define Maritime terms found in the OSHA Maritime Industry and determine appropriate standards
- Identify hazards that occur in the Maritime Industry and determine appropriate standards
- Locate OSHA Maritime Safety and Health standards, policies, and procedures
- Describe the use of the OSHA Maritime standards and regulations to supplement an on-going safety and health program

Prerequisites
Completion of the OSHA 5410 – Standards for the Maritime Industry (copy of completion certificate required). and have five (5) years maritime industry safety experience. A degree in occupational safety and health from an accredited college or university, certification a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or a Certified Marine Chemist (CMC) may be substituted for two (2) years of work related experience. Authorized OSHA Maritime Industry Outreach Training Program trainers are required to attend OSHA #5402 Maritime Industry Trainer Update Course at least once every four (4) years to maintain their trainer status.
Industry OSHA Standards courses (#510, #511, and #5410) must be completed not later than seven (7) years prior to completing the relevant Industry Trainer course (#500, #501, and #5400).

Regular maintenance on electrical equipment is essential to prevent unsafe work conditions, including faults that could cause shock hazards, arc flash, and arc blast conditions. Preventative maintenance is necessary for regulatory compliance and to extend the life and reliability of your equipment.
In 2023, the NFPA 70B Electrical Equipment Maintenance recommendations became a recognized consensus standard. Now enforceable by OSHA, NFPA 70B can be utilized to issue citations. Understanding this standard is important for facility managers and safety officers to ensure proper and effective electrical preventative maintenance.

EM 385-1-1 – CONSTRUCTION SAFETY HAZARD AWARENESS FOR CONTRACTORS

This NEW 40-hour class is designed specifically for contractors, military, and government employees, doing business with the US Navy, NAVFAC, US Army Corps of Engineers and other government agencies that require EM 385 training. The new 2024 updates are covered in this course.
Learn how to effectively prepare and submit an APP.
An Accident Prevention Plan (APP) must be very detailed and address the management processes that will be used to prevent hazards from all phases of the contract. Activity Hazard Analysis (AHA) forms require contractors to take a proactive approach by anticipating and controlling hazards prior to an accident occurring. They define the activity being performed, and identify the work sequence, specific hazards anticipated, and the control measures to be implemented to eliminate or reduce each hazard to an acceptable level.
Topics include:
- Jobsite Inspections and Employee Training requirements and documentation.
- Site Safety Health Officer’s qualifications and responsibilities
- Incident response and reporting procedures
Attendees receive a Certificate of Completion of a 40-hour EM 385-1-1 issued by the Chesapeake Region Safety Council as well as an OSHA 30 Hour for Construction card.
