The ABC-VA Young Leaders committee invites young professionals to attend our annual Panel Event: How to Thrive in the Construction Industry. Join us for this exciting Live and Virtual Panel Event to hear from ABC-VA member panelists. Comprised of some of the industry’s most successful business leaders and mid-career professionals, our expert panel will provide tips to help you develop your career while simultaneously learning how to become recession proof, develop emotional intelligence (EQ), and more amid the ongoing pandemic.
MEET THE PANELISTS
Cory Curtin, General Manager, Allan Myers – Northern Virginia
With over 21 years experience working in the AEC industry, Cory knows what makes teams successful. He is a keen observer of people, with great intuition allowing him to attract and recruit the best and brightest to his team. He is serious about winning, and relentlessly approaches challenges head on and eyes up.
Cory has overcome many challenges in life and in business but always strives to better his people, his teams, family and himself. He will always look you in the eyes, cares deeply, and values understanding and listening. He is intensely loyal and wears his passion, persistence, and grit on his sleeve.
Cory's foundation in construction began with his degree in Civil Engineering from Virginia Tech. His work experiences range from craft laborer, inspection, engineering to estimating and construction. His project focuses are civil infrastructure, with projects managed including large scale public utilities, Mission Critical sites, State and municipal highway, Large Scale Residential, Commercial, Distribution and Institutional. He has been tasked with some unique roles during his tenure in the business, ranging from managing merger and acquisitions, to pursuit manager on a large scale Public Private Partnership projects.
Cory has an excellent reputation within the industry and is very astute at value engineering, operational planning, creative problem solving and working with regulatory agencies to build quality projects. Cory not only builds projects but also effective construction teams, strategic relationships and partnerships with vendors, subcontractors, owners and engineers.
Cory enjoys volunteering through his Alma mater, Virginia Tech, in the development of industry safety techniques, guest lectures on leadership, and participation as a member of the MLSOC industry board.
Rich Ruckman, Project Executive, HITT Contracting Inc.
Rich Ruckman has worked for HITT Contracting Inc. since 2005. He started out as an intern and began working with the company full time after graduating from Virginia Tech in 2007 with a degree in Business Management. Rich started out full time in HITT’s entry level position as a Project Engineer where he worked on Government projects. Thirteen years later, Rich still works in HITT’s Government Sector as a Project Executive managing hundreds of contracts over the span of his career. Rich primarily focuses on IQIQ or JOC contracts with his team.
Rich’s team manages 25 or more HITT Team members, including Project Managers, Assistant Project Managers, Site Operations Superintendents, Project engineers, etc., and over 150 projects each year totaling around $50mm in revenue.
Rich has received several industry awards including Loudoun 40 Under 40 in 2019, 4 Fairfax County Awards of Excellence on projects, Harry Mellon Award of Merit for JOC project, two ABC Construction Excellence awards and two WBC Craftsmanship Awards.
While attending Virginia Tech, Rich met his wife, Amanda in 2005. Together, they live in Northern Virginia and have two children; Allen, 3 and Samantha, 1. In his spare time, Rich enjoys running, cycling, going to the gym and hunting deer, waterfowl and turkey.
Brian Fish, General Superintendent, Hensel Phelps
Brian currently serves as a General Superintendent for Hensel Phelps. He graduated from Pennsylvania College of Technology with a Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management in 2002, and has been with Hensel Phelps for 18 years. Brian began his career with Hensel Phelps as a Field Engineer in their Mid Atlantic District office based in Tysons Corner, Virginia.
In 2014, he transitioned down to Hensel Phelps’ Southeast District office in Orlando, Florida. Brian has extensive experience in providing Hensel Phelps’ project teams and clients the leadership and vision crucial to the success of each project he is assigned. By implementing Hensel Phelps’ proven systems, he ensures that all client budgetary and quality goals are met. Brian is fully versed in all areas of estimating, purchasing, engineering, superintendency, and project management on both new construction and renovation projects.
Earlier this year Brian was recognized by Engineering-News Record as a Top Young Professional on their Top 20 Under 40 List. Those chosen for this honor represent the finest leadership skills, commitment to community, and diversity the construction industry has to offer. Brian is an active member of the Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC) and currently serves on the Virginia Chapter Workforce Development Committee.
Brian has vast experience totaling over $3.57 billion in successfully completed projects. Recognized in the industry for his ability to isolate and resolve various design and compliance issues early in a project's evolution, his aptitude and expertise are evidenced in the many successful projects with which he has been involved at Hensel Phelps.
